Simplify Solar Wins Department of Energy 'Solar Sunshot Catalyst' Competition

Houston, TX; 10, February 2015: Simplify Solar wins the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative for Business Innovation, a prize that acknowledges the most cutting-edge ideas transforming the U.S. solar marketplace. Simplify Solar will receive support from the Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and $25,000 worth of software development services from TopCoder’s crowdsourcing platform.

Simplify Solar’s winning application highlights their turnkey solution for installing residential solar panels. The Simplify Solar cloud platform disrupts the residential solar market by lowering the financial barriers of entry and streamlining the entire process of purchasing and installing a solar PV system for your home. The founders believe that the creation of the Simplify Solar platform is a win-win solution for residential homeowners and installers. “We put the power back into the hands of consumers by giving them a centralized location to calculate their consumption information, build a solar PV system, select a financing option, choose local installers who compete for their business, track their installation, and even monitor energy savings and production post- installation,” says Sohail Hassan, the company’s President and co-founder.

“For homeowners, Simplify Solar empowers consumers with choice, convenience and value. For installers, it lets them concentrate on installing solar PV systems, and cuts out the headache of marketing their company or specifying and designing a solar PV system,” Hassan continues.

“We want to thank our initial customers who are providing early confirmation that the Simplify Solar model works,” said Roy Joseph, the CEO and co-founder of Simplify Solar. “This award is a definitive confirmation of Simplify Solar’s unique turnkey solution which combines an automated software platform, a network of qualified solar installers, and an affordable hardware package to lower the financial barriers of entry to purchase and install a solar PV system for your home.”

Simplify Solar was first released last November [2014] and is currently being tested by initial beta customers in Houston, TX. Additional early testers in the other major Texas markets will go through the platform before a full release later this year. The company’s founders will present their pitch at Demo Day in San Francisco this upcoming May with a chance to win $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative is a collaborative national effort that aggressively drives innovation to make solar energy fully cost-competitive with

traditional energy sources before the end of the decade. Through SunShot, the Energy Department supports efforts by private companies, universities, and national laboratories to drive down the cost of solar electricity to $0.06 per kilowatt-hour.
