Costa Mesa; California; 06, July 2015:
The leading Southern California womens' recovery facility New
Directions for Women has released a new position page clarifying why
they believe residential treatment is so much more effective for women
recovering from addiction. For a long time it has been widely understood
that residential treatment offers many benefits for women who are
willing to check themselves in to rehab, but in many cases clients have
been unsure exactly why this is. The new page will help to clarify this
common point of confusion.
"Residential programs like New Directions are often considered the best hope for clients with substance use disorder," the facility said in a statement. "Our programs are the most intensive kind of help for people with chemical dependency, and they can also help those who are also suffering from co-occurring mental or emotional disorders."

Besides offering intensive addiction therapy and treatment for dual-diagnosis patients, the facility also treats the children of their patients and provides family counseling. This is because, based on the experience of their staff, addiction is best treated in the context of a family disorder.
The New Directions belief in residential treatment is based on a number of crucial advantages which they have seen work in practice. This is also reflected in the larger addiction recovery community, which generally agrees residential programs tend to be more effective. The advantages of a residential program include:
- Distance from the client's previous lifestyle. The benefit which most people think of first, when a woman enrolls herself in residential treatment she puts herself in a place which is far away from their current lifestyle and home. This is crucial because the best counselors and therapists in the world would find it a challenge to treat a woman they met just once a week and who was still immersed in the triggers which produce addictive behavior. Residential facilities isolate patients from these triggers, letting them change their behavior away from bad influences and in a healthy setting.
- Continual monitoring. Though it sometimes seems intrusive at the beginning, the initial stages of a recovery require constant supervision to ensure clients don't stumble on their path. Another benefit is this monitoring helps them track progress on the path to sobriety.
- Close, intimate support from staff and fellow patients. It's less obvious, but perhaps the most powerful factor which lets the patient achieve the recovery she wants is the tremendously close relationship she enjoys with her counselor at a residential recovery facility. Here, it can be much closer and more intense.
- A different approach to recovery. The therapists at a residential facility are able to, and do, take a totally different approach to managing recovery from their colleagues who work in clinics and offices. The mindset of a counselor at a residential facility is completely different, since they can work with patients round-the-clock if need be. Normal therapists only get to see their patients on an occasional basis.
